The workshop is organised by
Eva Bayer Fluckiger (EPFL) and
Karim Johannes Becher (EPFL).
It is part of the European Network
Algebraic K-Theory, Linear Algebraic Groups and Related Structures
(HPRN-CT-2002-00287).
The emphasis of this workshop is placed on several mini-courses aimed especially to young researchers.
The main themes of the workshop are :
- essential and canonical dimension
- linear algebraic groups and Galois cohomology
- splitting patterns of quadratic forms
On tuesday 26/7 at 17h30 we will have
a wine reception in honour of Manuel Ojanguren (EPFL),
on the occasion of his retirement at the end of this academic year.
To announce your participation and for any related questions please contact
Monique Kiener.

A special talk will be given by Ivan Panin (St. Petersburg, Russia) on tuesday at 16h20: On a non-commutative version of purity.
The talks start at 9h30 each day and they end at around 17h00. Wednesday afternoon will be free. All lectures take place in lecture room MA30.
The schedule is now available.
Lunch will be taken at the restaurant Le Parmentier.
The conference dinner, thursday evening at 19h00, will equally take place there.
You have computer access 8h00-18h00 in room MA10.
Access to the public wireless network of the EPFL is equally provided.
All necessary information will be given at the beginning of the conference.
For the participants who whish to stay at the Hotel des Voyageurs in the center of Lausanne (close to the metro going directly to the EPFL)
we will make the reservation directly.
If you want to take this opportunity, please notify us as soon as possible.
If you want to organise individually your accomodation you may find useful
information at the
official site of the city of Lausanne (accomodation).
Furthermore, two low budget options are the
Lausanne Guesthouse, close to the train station and to the city center,
and the Jeunotel, at the outskirts of Lausanne but equally with good connection to the EPFL.
From the city center to the conference
To reach the conference from your accomodation in Lausanne, take
the metro m1 (TSOL)
in direction Renens.
There will be one train every 10 minutes, so you don't really need to look at the
time table before.
The trip from the center to the EPFL costs 2,80 CHF; try to have exact change ready for the ticket machine, it won't give you back anything!
Step off at the station named EPFL and leave the platform in direction opposite to the driving direction.
After crossing the tracks continue in the same direction following the Route de la Sorge and then turn right after 50 meters into Avenue Piccard.
Enter the MA building, which is the second building
on the right hand side.
The conference takes place in lecture room MA30, which is in the third floor of this building.
Since the part between the metro station and the lecture room is probably the most challanging part of your travel to Lausanne, it is worthwile
to have a look on the following map, where you see the MA building right in the center and the rail tracks in the north.
(Ideally, you print this map after zooming in.)

Visiting Lausanne
Already when you arrive you will notice that Lausanne is a particular place
made of ups and downs, bridges and tunnels.
Within the town area, there are altitude differences of more than 250 meters and you may find buildings which are accessible from three or four different floors.
You need some minutes more to discover that Lausanne is also a very beautiful town. For this you have to leave the area between the train station and
the comercial center around the metro station `Flon' which is dominated by dreadful architecture and a lot of construction sites.
Anywhere else you find peaceful lovely quarters.
Especially worth a visit is the Old Town (called the Cité) around the cathedral.
Walk at the lake
After a long conference day you might want to walk back into town.
Just go from the EPFL to the lake (very close) and then follow the shore.
You will pass many places where you can swim in the lake.
To walk until Ouchy, where you can take the metro to the city center,
will take you almost one hour, but whenever you want to quit you just need to turn left and to catch a number 2 bus bringing you right to the city center.
Museums
Lausanne has some remarkable museums (list not exhaustive):
Boat trip to Montreux / Chillion (wednesday afternoon)
A special suggestion for wednesday afternoon is a trip to Montreux by boat
with a visit of the Château de Chillon and the Old Town of Montreux.
Those interested should join at 13h00, after lunch, at the metro station (EPFL)
to go to Ouchy. The boat is leaving there at 14h00 and it takes
about one and a half hour to Montreux and Chillon.
For the trip back to Lausanne in the evening, one may take the train
(which goes very frequently and takes less than 30 minutes).
The journey will cost around 30 CHF per person (26 CHF if more than 10 people are joining for the boat trip). For the visit of the castle you should count 10 CHF.
You find more useful information on the site
Lausanne-Tourisme.
Please announce your participation
by email to Monique Kiener. The email should contain your full name, the name of your host institution, and whether or not you want us to make a reservation at the Hotel des Voyageurs (at a preferential rate).
